Turf Toe - Here Is What You Need To Know

8th June 2022

A sprain of the ligament around the big toe joint is a condition that affects many athletes. The term "turf toe" was coined in reference to the fact that it is a common injury in contact sports such as soccer and football. Turf toe can be a very painful injury, and can often sideline athletes for weeks or even months.

What is turf toe?

Turf toe is a common injury among athletes. It occurs when the big toe is bent upwards towards the top of the foot, putting strain on the ligaments and causing pain. If you suspect you have turf toe, it is important to see a doctor or podiatrist as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment.

If you suffer from a metatarsophalangeal joint sprain, you may experience symptoms such as tenderness, swelling, and reduced movement in the affected joint. In most cases, surgery or immobilisation is not necessary and your podiatrist may recommend rest and ice to help reduce pain and swelling.

Symptoms & causes of turf toe

Turf toe can be a debilitating injury that can sideline athletes for weeks. The big toe joint is particularly vulnerable to this type of injury, which happens when athletes put too much pressure on it. This can occur in many different sports, but it is most common in football.

Some symptoms that you will most likely notice while suffering from turf toe are:

  • Pain in and surrounding the big toe
  • Reduced movement in the joint
  • Swelling surrounding the big toe
  • A popping or cracking noise when the injury occurs

Treatments for turf toe

After you consult with your podiatrist, they may advise you to take pain medication and rest your foot to allow for healing. If the pain is severe and chronic, they may then recommend additional treatments.

Things you can do to ease the pain at home are:

Rest - It's important to listen to your body and give it the time it needs to heal after an injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, you may need to take a few days or weeks off from sports or other activities.

Ice & elevate - The RICE method for treating an injured toe is simple and effective. Resting the leg and keeping it elevated above the level of the heart helps to reduce swelling. Applying ice to the area numbs pain and further reduces inflammation. Finally, wrapping a compression bandage around the foot provides support and stability.

Strap and stabilise - One way to alleviate pain and aid in the healing process of the big and first toes is by taping them to prevent over-flexion or over-extension of the joint.

Use orthotics - As an athlete, you know the importance of having the right gear to help you perform at your best. Customised orthotics and over-the-counter inserts can provide relief and support for common conditions like turf toe, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, and fallen arches. Having the right support can make all the difference in your ability to stay in the game.

Surgery - In many cases, turf toe injuries will require surgery. If there is severe damage to bones, muscles, and nerves, surgery may be necessary. Depending on the extent of the injury, different types of surgeries may be required.
